Abstract: Social Action in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. The Concept of “Socio-Digital Institution”
The concept of socio-digital institutions, proposed by Teubner and Backers, to which this article is dedicated, can be framed as one of the conceptual resources developed to address new questions that arise from the evolving role of artificial intelligence in social dynamics. In this article, I intend to explore the implications and assumptions of the concept of socio-digital institutions by analysing it from three perspectives. The first perspective is ontological. The second perspective is typological. The third perspective is meta-theoretical. My goal is to highlight how the concept of digital institutions fits into the theory of social systems of which Teubner is a main proponent. In particular, I aim to investigate the role of the digital institution as conceived by Beckers and Teubner in social systems and how the peculiar nature of communication mediated or produced by artificial intelligence may impact such a role.
