Abstract: Whatever it Takes: Emergency and Rationality
Emergency is defined in many ways. Reflecting on the practical and conceptual confusion between emergency and exception, an unsolvable circularity is pointed out. Is it possible to restore some objective semantic depth to emergency? Following the proposal of Parmigiani the answer seems to be positive. Rational control provides the sole restraint on the arbitrariness of schmittian sovereignty by contrasting the rhetoric of security with the culture of justification.
